After three years of reconstruction work, the fully modernized central security lanes in Terminal 2 at Munich Airport were officially opened today. The 15 lanes were launched by the Southern Bavarian Aviation Authority, part of the Government of Upper Bavaria, just in time for the Easter holidays. The modern technology with CT scanners facilitates and optimizes processes for passengers and staff, while significantly enhancing overall security standards.
First and foremost, the new equipment offers greater convenience for passengers: for example, up to four passengers can present their hand luggage for screening at the same time. Electronic devices and liquids no longer have to be un- and repacked. The CT scanners also provide enhanced security by automatically detecting explosives in every piece of baggage. This, combined with the three-dimensional view of the screening images, makes work easier for the security staff, resulting in fewer follow-up checks and even more time saved at the security checkpoint.
At the inauguration of the security lanes at Munich Airport, Bavarian Minister of Transport Christian Bernreiter, Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers, and Lufthansa Airlines CEO Jens Ritter had the opportunity to personally test the completed security lanes for themselves. They also received a technical explanation of the system from experts from the Ministry of Transport, the Aviation Authority and the security company at Munich Airport (SGM).
Minister of State Christian Bernreiter: "At Munich Airport, we rely on the latest security technology! The new CT lanes will make security checks for passengers and baggage even safer, faster and more convenient. The Free State of Bavaria is investing more than €45 million to gradually equip all security checkpoints at Munich Airport with these new lanes, including Terminal 1. We are also investing in Nuremberg and Memmingen to maintain and expand the leading positions of the Bavarian airports."
Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport: "The new security lanes are one of the most important quality features at our airport. Just in time for the first major travel season of the year, our passengers can now benefit from the latest and safest technology, more efficient processes and noticeably more comfort. These are the standards we, as an international premium hub, want to fulfill together with our partners. We owe it to the outstanding commitment of everyone involved that we were able to complete this complex conversion ahead of schedule during ongoing operations."
Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines: "Today is an important step towards the future. The common goal of the airport and us is to offer a premium product as well as reliability and punctuality. The CT scanners are a perfect fit for this. Our guests will now be able to get to their gate faster and enjoy Terminal 2 even more relaxed."
As early as 2019, the Southern Bavarian Aviation Authority, together with SGM and the Terminal 2 Operating Company, a joint venture between Munich Airport and Lufthansa, successfully tested two pilot systems for the first time in Germany. In October 2022, reconstruction work then started on the central security checkpoint in Terminal 2. In addition to the now completed regular lanes, two further security lanes with CT scanners will be built by the end of 2025, which will offer greater convenience, especially to families with small children and air travelers with limited mobility. The planned conversion measures for Terminal 1 will be completed by the beginning of the 2026 summer vacation period. With the new scanners, the airport, as a premium hub, is thus taking a decisive step towards innovative modernization.
